Will ChatGPT Replace Google Search?
A look into AI-Generated programs and their impact in the near future
AI or Artificial Intelligence is a buzzword that has been all over the internet. It refers to computer systems that can reason and learn, and perform tasks that normally require human cognition.
For the past few months, we have observed the rise of numerous AI tools such as DALL-E, Dawn AI, Lensa AI… ChatGPT is the one that gained the most attention and traffic as it becomes the fastest-growing app ever, accumulated over 100 Million monthly active users since November 2022.
The ChatBot sparked off a lot of conversations which resulted in Microsoft acquiring OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT, in January 2023 for $10 Billion. Microsoft has decided to take on Google Search dominance by integrating ChatGPT into its own search engine, Bing.
ChatGPT rapidly established itself as a great and very capable web copilot. It is capable of generating answers to most of the questions you have. Some use cases are writing essays and CVs, solving Math problems, telling jokes and even generating code. It can assist you in various ways and provoke discord in the education field. Indeed, some students have recourse to these AI tools for their assignments.
As it grew in popularity it became a solid alternative to Google Search Engine and got more users using even more AI tools. They become more performant and accurate since they use deep learning techniques to essentially learn from human feedback. The generated text output becomes relevant as people ask for the same things with different inputs.
In fact, it is becoming so good that you would have a hard time telling if this very article is written by a human or generated with ChatGPT.
On January 23, 2023, Microsoft announced their acquisition of OpenAi, the company that launched ChatGPT.
On February 7, 2023, Microsoft announced the integration of chatGPT into their search engine Bing and their browser Edge.
It offers a new web browsing experience with better search results, an improved user interface and can answer specific questions.
Earlier in the week, Google introduced Bard, “experimental conversational AI service” in response to Microsoft's acquisition of ChatGPT.

Google has been dominating the search engine market for more than two decades. In 2022, 92% of the worldwide search queries were made with Google, per GlobalStats.
It’s an opportunity for Microsoft to rival with Google and dent its Search Engine Monopoly.
Both can still coexist. Google still has an edge over Microsoft since they have Youtube and a suite of apps (Google Docs, Gmail, Calendar, Drive…) that are tied hand in hand with Google Search and allow you a great web browsing experience.
ChatGPT ended up not being a hype but a relevant tool as it sparked the interest of Microsoft. Other Giants like Google have been building their own version as well. Will you start using Bing? Artificial Intelligence is now the main focus of these Big Tech companies which influences daily in our digital lives. The promise is to deliver tools for discovery and to improve lives. The real question is: Will you start using Bing more than Google?
